Ginger
The name “ginger’ comes from the Sanskrit word "sinabera" meaning "shaped like a horn" because of its resemblance to an antler. Ginger has been the popular main ingredient in gingerbread dating back to the Greeks and the island of Rhodes in 2400 BC. In the 1880s English pub patrons often shook ginger into their drinks – a practice later formalized in a drink we call ginger ale. Ginger has a slightly biting and hot taste. Its aroma is rich, sweet, warm and woody. It is grown in India and Jamaica, and commonly used in gingerbread, ginger ale, gingersnaps and Asian dishes.
